Sliding Compound Miter Saw Workstation

This project was born out of necessity. I now have a sliding compound miter saw, so I needed a stand. I've heard nothing but good things about building outfeed tables as opposed to a collapsible stand. After reading Setting Up Shop by Sandor Nagyszalanczy I decided that having rough lumber storage next to the saw would be a good idea. So 2 + 2 is still four and combining the two made sense. I put the lumber storage below, the saw with a dust collection hood on top, and sheet good storage in the back. The entire stand cost around $60.00. 80% of the 2 x 4 and sheet material were from the Home Depot scrap bin (thanks to cuts in the wrong place!) and the Incra miter gauges were all on clearance from www.woodpeckers.com

You can download free plans for the stand from the Plans page.

I wish I had purchased two.  the brass thumb screws the arrows are pointing to make it easy to slide the table out of the way when I have to do any 45 degree beveling to the left.
Miter Saw Station Mk II 03.jpg (189158 bytes) The dust hood has a 4" hole cut into the bottom where the dust hood is attached.  The 3/4 HP dust collector turns on automatically when I start the saw's power thanks to a nifty device from Sears.

Miter Saw Station Mk II 05.jpg (224668 bytes)  The dust hood surrounds the saw on all sides and comes right up to the back side of the support tables.  The edges of the dust hood are all rounded over.  the interior corners are all caulked to help prevent dust from escaping.
Miter Saw Station Mk II 06.jpg (209903 bytes) The dust hood is mounted to the stand via heavy duty right angle brackets I picked up from home depot.  The hood itself is constructed of 1/2" plywood
Miter Saw Station Mk II 07.jpg (244731 bytes) The 3/4" HP dust collector is from Delta.  The flexible hose reaches to my drill press which is two feet to the left of this picture.
Miter Saw Station Mk II 08.jpg (223561 bytes) There are two shelves under the stand I use to store lumber and longer cut offs.  I can load longer lumber into it right from the outside since the stand is next to an outside door.  It works great and adds additional weight to the stand.
Miter Saw Station Mk II 09.jpg (117173 bytes) I managed to place the stand so that the right extension wing was facing a door to the rear of the shop. That way I can unlimited space for anything longer than 10' that needs to be cut.
Miter Saw Station Mk II 10.jpg (238114 bytes) Here's a shot looking toward the outside door from the left support table of the saw.  The Incra fence lines right up to the SCMS fence.
Miter Saw Station Mk II 11.jpg (294537 bytes) This is a good shot of the saw itself. It's been a pleasure to use and it is definitely one of those tools that fall into the "I don't know what I did before it" category. I had to remove the supplied outfeed supports that came with the saw to butt the stand supports flush with the saw's table. The saw is bolted to the table top.
